Brain-Storm MOMO Anatomical Leather Shift Knob

I felt that the shift knob on the standard Miata looks cheap. Many people put on a spherical Voodoo knob. Although I can imagine that such a knob must shift very nicely, I felt it was out of tone with the rest of the interior.

Instead I bought a MOMO tall anatomical leather shift knob from Brain-Storm. The MOMO knob does not screw down deep enough to reach the leather shift boot, but Brain-Storm adds a little black metal ring to take up the slack.

Installation

Basically simple: screw off the old knob and screw on the new. However, since the knob is not symmetric but anatomically shaped, you cannot simply screw it down until tight. Brain-Storm provides you with some "Titen", a glue which you put on the thread. Then you screw the knob in the right position and let the stuff dry to hold it.

Watch your step: this Titen is liquid as water and will run off. I got some of the stuff on my leather boot and had a heck of a time getting it off. Worse, the Titen was not enough to hold the knob. So, I bought some "Lock-Tite", a similar glue, and used that instead. This did hold the knob, but I used too much: the next time I had to take off the knob to get at my radio, I had a heck of a time. Be conservative. Also be careful, because the Lock-Tite runs as water too.

Evaluation

I really like the way it looks. It may not shift as well as a Voodoo knob, but it does fit your hand like a glove. And it looks classy. Note however that it is a solid rubber knob, not truly leather.

One minor annoyance is that after you remove the knob a couple of times, there is enough Lock-Tite gone that you have to add some.

I have since replaced this knob with a Knobmeister knob
